Will Keating passed away on March 14, 2018. He was only 12 years old. In October of 2017, he was diagnosed with a form of Nephrotic Syndrome. As part of his treatment, Will received infusions from Children's Hospital Orange County's (CHOC) Outpatient Infusion Center (OPI) two to three times a week. We cannot say enough about the wonderful care he received in the OPI. Due to his condition, he was very swollen. Inserting an IV was near impossible without the use of an ultrasound machine. CHOC's Outpatient Infusion Center did not have a dedicated ultrasound machine for their use, so Will, along with many other children, waited until a team arrived with an ultrasound machine to insert their IVs. This wait for Will could be up to 2 hours; time spent waiting just for the ability to start treatments which lasted hours. The week prior to his passing, Will was joking with his mom. If we won the lottery, the first thing we would buy was an ultrasound machine dedicated solely to the OPI. That way, no child would have to spend time waiting to get their infusion started. Nurses in the unit had expressed the need for their own machine but let it be known there was no funding for the ultrasound or nurse training. Thanks to your generous donations, CHOC has purchased a new Ultrasound. Will's Final Wish has allowed CHOC to reduce the time waiting for treatments to start and spend more time at home with their families. While this piece of equipment has been funded and put into use, many children can still be helped. Our goal is to raise $150,000 to continue to help the children who require the services of CHOC's OPI. All of the money raised will be used to purchase necessary equipment and provide training to the CHOC Outpatient Infusion Center nurses.
