Together, WE Find Hope for Kids

Hello everyone,

My name is Crystal Alvarez and I am sharing my story in hopes of motivating, inspiring, or helping someone relate and feel a sense of hope.

Back in November 2013, I lost my aunt to breast and ovarian cancer. She was more than family; she was like a second mom to me. Her loss changed me, and instead of letting it consume me, I decided in 2014 to do something I had never done before: I started running.

At the time, I couldn't even run a full mile. But I kept going. One mile turned into two, then I signed up for my first 5K, and eventually my first half-marathon at the Long Beach Marathon weekend in October 2015.

Since then, running has taken me further than I ever imagined. I've completed over 20 5Ks, placing first or second in several races, along with more than 13 half marathons. In 2017, I reached a major milestone by completing three full marathons: the Rock 'n' Roll San Diego Marathon, the Los Angeles Marathon, and the Long Beach Marathon on October 11, 2017.

After that, I made a promise to myself: I wouldn't run another full marathon unless it were for something bigger than me, unless it was for a cause.

Now, nine years later, I'm returning.

On October 11, 2026, I will be running the Long Beach Marathon again, this time with purpose. This year, I won’t be running alone.

One of the most special parts of this journey is having my friend’s son, Zeus Reyes, running the half marathon alongside me. At just 13 years old and barely meeting the age requirement, this will be his very first half marathon, and seeing someone so young step up to support this cause reminds me that compassion, strength, and community can inspire every generation. Having him be part of this journey makes every mile even more meaningful.

I commit to running 26.2 miles in under 4 hours and 30 minutes, Zeus will aim to finish the half-marathon strong in 2 hours and 30 minutes while we raise $26,000 for Child Life services at Rady Children's Health.

As a volunteer in the Emergency Department at Rady Children's Health, formerly CHOC, I've had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the impact of Child Life specialists. In some of the most overwhelming and uncertain moments for children and their families, they bring comfort, distraction, and a sense of normalcy. I've seen fear turn into courage, and it's something that stays with you. That experience is a big part of why this cause means so much to me.

US news and world report badgeAll proceeds from this journey will go directly to their Child Life Program, which helps children facing serious medical challenges cope through play, music therapy, education, and emotional support, turning fear into courage and helping families feel less alone during incredibly difficult times.

I truly believe we all have a gift, and mine is the desire to help others. This is my way of making a difference, one mile at a time.

If you can, please support, donate, or share. Every contribution helps bring comfort, strength, and hope to children who need it most.

Let's run for something bigger together 🤍
